How Healthy Is MILK?
In this article Milk refers also to Milk Products, which includes cheese, yogurt, sour cream and ice cream.
In 1915 the electric refrigerator came into being, allowing milk to be kept for days rather than hours. America then plunged into a near obsession with milk drinking that has come to be part of the national character. Three glasses of milk a day turned into a staple of the diet for city dwellers. For over 100 years there has been a certain group of people, both practitioners and researchers who have taught that cow's milk and other dairy products are a major cause of disease!
A growing number of doctors, especially allergists and gastroenterologists contend that milk is not essential to good health, and that milk is at the root of a range of undiagnosed or misdiagnosed illnesses that are affecting the population. especially children. Milk and milk products have been implicated in a host of medical problems.
1. Lactose Intolerance is a very common condition in which the body lacks the enzyme necessary for breaking down the sugar in milk. This situation leads to digestive discomforts such as gas, bloating and loose bowels. However, these problems represent on the tip of the iceberg.
2. Problems seen in children were well documented by Dr Claude Frazier, a leading U.S. allergist. Babies born with an allergy to milk soon start on what he termed "an allergic march" toward a lifetime of suffering from asthma if the cause is not diagnosed at the beginning.
He always advised mothers to breast-feed their babies. He said that "cow's milk" was perfected by cows for calves, whereas human milk had been concocted down through the ages for human babies". Other problems related to milk seen in children are colic, eczema, failure to thrive, fussiness sinus and ear infections, flu and colds.
3. Cardiovascular disease: A Connecticut cardiologist. Dr. Kurt Otter, felt that the homogenization of milk promoted atherogenesis. i e. progressive obstruction of the arterial circulation. Homogenization is the process - hereby the fat is evenly distributed throughout the milk. This was done in only the past few generations.
According to Dr. Oster. homogenization allowed a substance called xanthine oxidase to he absorbed, and thereby promote vascular disease. It is best to avoid milk products if you are predisposed to coronary, cerebral or peripheral vascular disease.
4. Juvenile diabetes: Recent research has implicated milk as a major potential contributor to juvenile diabetes.
Antibodies formed by the immune system against milk seems to also attack the cells of the Islets of Langerhans in the pancreas which produce insulin. It is sometimes possible to reverse juvenile diabetes by eliminating milk products from the diet and supplementing with niacinamide (B3).
5. Cerebral allergies due to milk may elicit depression, anxiety, irritability and a host of other neurotic and even psychotic symptoms.
6. Female problems including painful breast cysts There is a physician in Canada who has helped many women overcome breast problems by eliminating milk products which contain a substantial concentration of female hormones from the cow. This excess estrogen level not only leads to breast problems, but also menstrual irregularities and excess bleeding.
7. Gastroenterological problems related to milk products abound, including nausea, heartburn, constipation, diarrhea, bloating, intestinal spasms and an aggravation of the symptoms of ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease.
8. Mucus formation: It is well known that milk contributes to excess mucus and aggravates sinus conditions as well as bronchitis and chronic lung diseases.
Perhaps as many as 50% of the population reacts to milk in one way or another, some more violently than others. Our advice is to avoid all milk products, including yogurt. One billion people in China have no milk products, and yet, seem to have the least incidence of bone loss or osteoporosis. You can obtain calcium from vegetable sources as well as sesame seeds. Bone health does not require the intake of milk products.
When you would need a liquid like milk as a beverage or on your cereal you can use soy-milk or rice and other grain and nut milks which are now readily available in health food stores.
If you have a computer, you can go on the net and find tons of information about the toxic affects of cows milk. http://www.rawmilk.org We are all affected differently because we are different chemically!
